Wozniacki to face Peng in US Open Semi-finals
NEW YORK: Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki will face China’s Peng Shuai in the semi-final of the US Open to qualify for the final at Flushing Meadows.
US Open runner-up in 2009 Wozniacki who defeated Italy’s Sara Errani 6-0, 6-1, a very dominant victory for the Dane. Last time she qualified for the Grand Slam semi-finals in 2011 of US Open.
Wozniacki crushed World No.13 Errani in two straight sets in the windy and breezy conditions of Flushing Meadows, after qualifying for the semi-final she said, ‘It was really tricky conditions with the wind but I tried to stay aggressive, you always go out there and are a little bit nervous. I served really well after that.’
She further said, ‘It means so much to me, it’s been a pretty up and down year for me, and to be here in the semi-finals of the US Open again is just incredible.’
In Peng’s 37th Grand Slam attempt she qualified for her first Grand Slam semi-final, another dominant victory by Peng who defeated Swiss teen Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-1. Peng joined China’s Li Na and Zheng Jie as they are the only chinese players to qualify for the semi-finals of a Grand Slam.
After winning the match Peng said, ‘Thirty-seven times Grand Slam, it’s a little bit too exciting. I love tennis, I love to play, but it’s a long time, the career. It’s tough. Sometimes I’ve thought to give up and stop playing because I don’t know if I can make it or not.’
She added, ‘My coach and my parents always told me to fight and not give up that today was coming.’
